College Admissions Essay free essay sample
ââ¬Å"Wake up. We are here.â⬠My mother tapped on my arm gently. I reluctantly opened my heavy lidded eyes and let out a prolonged yawn. I apathetically sat up and turned my iPod on. The lights of the plane turned on, to what seemed to me, like a flash of lightning, accompanied by the luminous rays of the setting sun. The smell of jet fuel engulfed the air in the cabin. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m upâ⬠¦how close are we?â⬠I leisurely turn to my mother; she looked up at me. ââ¬Å"Close,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"How close?â⬠I replied. She sluggishly bowed her head, gazed out the window, looked up, and ponderously said to me Look out your window. At that very moment my iPod was playing the song Southampton, the soundtrack from Titanic, and the rapturous tune was so blissful and relaxing. I slightly tilted my head, which coincided with the plane turning, and for a brief moment I felt as if we had conjoined into one unit. Although she had been born in America, she carried a thick European accent when she spoke. Continuing my rounds of ââ¬Å"helloââ¬â¢sâ⬠, ââ¬Å"thankyouââ¬â¢sâ⬠and ââ¬Å"I love itâ⬠to all my relatives, I finally arrived to the other side of my heritage. This side of the room sat my Oma and Opa, one set of grandparents from my motherââ¬â¢s side who had fled Germany when the Naziââ¬â¢s started persecuting the Jewish followers during the Holocaust. I was later told they left through Switzerland with only the closes on their back, immigrating not to seek a better life but to stay alive. The other set of grandparents have passed way however, they too emigrated from European Countries. One entered from Ireland to escape starvation where the Potato famine wiped out most of their family decades previous. The other from arrived from Poland to escape war torn Europe. After passing through Ellis Island, they started a new life in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As I grew up I was so fortunate to experience my diverse heritage. From my childhood, where I would spend nearly every Sunday at one of my immigrated great grandparentsââ¬â¢ houses, I always was inflected with ethic foods, language, and culture. The traditions and stories retold at out Sunday dinners have shaped my values for my life. It is this culture diversity that I want to share and explore through the University of Pittsburgh College of Business Administrationââ¬â¢s Global management and International Relations.
